An EV charging pile, or EVSE, is the equipment that connects a vehicle to the supply network and manages the charging process. Testing has to confirm not only that the equipment is electrically safe, but that it communicates correctly with the vehicle and interoperates with vehicles from different manufacturers.
The main requirements are IEC 61851-1 for the general requirements of conductive charging systems, IEC 61851-21-2 for EMC, IEC 61851-23 for DC charging stations and IEC 62196 for the connectors. In China the equivalent standards are GB/T 18487.1, GB/T 20234 and GB/T 27930 for the communication protocol. Tests cover dielectric strength, earth continuity, insulation monitoring, residual current protection, pilot signal behaviour, communication conformance, interoperability, ingress protection and environmental endurance.
NTEK tests AC wallboxes, DC fast chargers, charging connectors and cables, and provides the EMC and safety reports needed for CE marking and for the Chinese market.
