Key words of this article:

Indonesia is pushing hard on digital transformation, acting on both policy and technology. The government has merged the Directorate General of Posts and Informatics Resources and Equipment (SDPPI) with the Directorate General of Posts and Informatics into a Directorate General of Digital Infrastructure to optimise resource management, and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (KOMDIGI) has announced the introduction of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 to upgrade communications infrastructure.

Indonesia's digital infrastructure directorate

SDPPI and the Directorate General of Posts and Informatics have been merged into the Directorate General of Digital Infrastructure. The change is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Indonesia's digital transformation and is set out in Presidential Regulation No. 174 of 2024 on the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (KOMDIGI). As part of the restructuring, the functions of SDPPI and PPI are now concentrated in the new directorate general, making its operation more rational.

The merger improves the management of resources, licences and telecommunications equipment certification, strengthens the focus on Indonesia's digital infrastructure and aligns better with the Digital Indonesia 2045 vision.

Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7

On 8 February 2025 KOMDIGI issued a press release announcing the introduction of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 operating in the 6 GHz band. To support these technologies KOMDIGI issued the following regulations.

Regulation No. 2 of 2025, amending Ministry of Communication and Informatics Regulation No. 2 of 2024 on the use of the radio spectrum under class licences. The amendment opens 5925-6425 MHz in the 6 GHz band, allowing two classes of device: very low power (VLP) devices, which may be used indoors and outdoors with a power limit of 14 dBm, and low power indoor (LPI) devices, which are restricted to indoor use with a power limit of 23 dBm.

Decree No. 12 of 2025 on technical standards for radio spectrum and radio local area network telecommunications equipment under class licences.
