Vietnam's Ministry of Science and Technology (MST) has formally announced the opening of 5925-6425 MHz for Wi-Fi (WLAN/RLAN) devices. The change stems from an amendment to Circular No. 08/2021/TT-BTTTT, an important Vietnamese regulation on the management of licence-exempt radio equipment.
Technical requirements
The new rules set clear technical requirements for use of the 6 GHz band:
1. Indoor applications: equipment used in shielded environments must not exceed an equivalent isotropically radiated power of 200 mW, with power spectral density of no more than 10 dBm/MHz EIRP.
2. Indoor and outdoor use: equipment permitted both indoors and outdoors is limited to 25 mW EIRP, with power spectral density of no more than 1 dBm/MHz EIRP.
3. General rules: use of the band on unmanned aircraft systems is strictly prohibited, and 5925-5945 MHz is designated as a guard band.
Notably, the rules also set new spurious emission limits to prevent interference with other communication services, and the ministry has updated the applicable bands and radiation limits for wireless charging devices. The opening of the band is seen as an important step in Vietnam's digital infrastructure development and creates a favourable regulatory environment for Wi-Fi 6E and future wireless technology.
