The POPs Regulation was adopted to implement the commitments of the European Union under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the 1979 Protocol to the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution on Persistent Organic Pollutants. POPs stands for persistent organic pollutants: substances that are highly toxic, difficult to degrade in the environment, bioaccumulative, able to travel long distances across borders through air, water and migratory species and to be deposited far from their point of release, and able to accumulate in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
