The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) has issued Notice No. 2026-143 proposing amendments to the Operational Guidelines for Electrical and Consumer Product Safety Management. The public consultation runs until 10 July 2026.
What is proposed
One key proposed change concerns the classification of tablet computers under Korea's electrical product safety framework.
Under the amendment, only devices with a screen diagonal of 20 cm or more could be classified as tablets. The revised definition also makes clear that products with voice call capability can still be regarded as tablets if they meet the screen size requirement.
The change is expected to draw a clearer line between modern large-screen smartphones and tablets, helping manufacturers and importers identify the correct certification route for their products.
In addition to the tablet update, KATS proposed revisions to battery cell testing requirements in the same consultation.
Stakeholders including manufacturers, importers, testing laboratories and industry associations may submit comments on the proposed amendments until 10 July 2026.
