Ukraine Opens the 6 GHz Band to Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7

Key words of this article:

In August 2025 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine formally adopted Resolution No. 976, approving important amendments to the Plan for the Allocation and Use of Radio Frequency Resources and opening 5945-6425 MHz for wireless communication. The move is seen as a key step in developing Ukraine's digital infrastructure and improving network quality.

New band for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7

Under the resolution, from 1 September 2025 the 5945-6425 MHz band may be used for low power Wi-Fi equipment supporting next-generation wireless local area network technology including Wi-Fi 6E and, in future, Wi-Fi 7. As an important part of the 6 GHz spectrum, the band provides a wider channel for high-speed data transmission indoors and outdoors and eases congestion in existing bands.

Device type Use scenario Power limit Out-of-band emission limit below 5935 MHz
Low power indoor (LPI) Indoor only no more than 200 mW (24 dBm EIRP) no more than -22 dBm/MHz
Very low power (VLP) Indoor and outdoor no more than 25 mW (14 dBm EIRP) no more than -45 dBm/MHz

Policy background and strategy

The change is an important sign of Ukraine aligning its spectrum policy fully with the EU. The band plan adopted is identical to the EU 5945-6425 MHz allocation of 2021 and consistent with the relevant technical decisions of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations and ETSI EN 302 687. The government has also announced a 3G sunset, with the 3G network to be switched off entirely by 31 December 2030 to release more high-quality spectrum for 4G and 5G.

Compliance and industry preparation

The National Commission for State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radiofrequency Spectrum and Postal Services (NCEC) requires all manufacturers of WLAN 6E equipment intended for the Ukrainian market to complete certification of general conditions of use under the newly revised technical standards. The relevant technical standards have been updated accordingly.

The policy is expected to significantly upgrade Ukraine's wireless equipment market, bring consumers a better network experience and create new opportunities for equipment manufacturers and network operators. Companies should familiarise themselves with the technical changes early and prepare products for compliance.
