The European Commission has adopted amending Regulation (EU) 2025/1988, updating the current REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.
The amendment adds a new entry 82 to Annex XVII specifically restricting the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in firefighting foams. The new rules enter into force on 23 October 2025, the twentieth day after publication in the Official Journal.
Entry added
Substance: 82. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
Defined as substances containing at least one perfluorinated methyl (CF3) or methylene (CF2) carbon atom with no hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or iodine atom attached.
Background
The amendment targets PFAS, which are persistent and bioaccumulative and may pose long-term risks. The new rules aim to control these chemicals and so reduce their potential impact on the environment and public health.
