On 3 April 2025 the Indian Ministry of Communications (MoC) issued a press note outlining the measures the government has taken to develop 6G technology. India has also contributed to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) framework for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) 2030, which covers 6G use cases and the capabilities of 6G technology.
In March 2023 the government published the Bharat 6G Vision, which aims to design, develop and deploy 6G network technology to provide ubiquitous intelligent and secure connectivity worldwide and deliver a high quality of life. The following measures have been taken to promote 6G development in India:
1. Funding two test beds, a 6G THz test bed and an advanced optical communication test bed, to promote R&D and innovation in the country.
2. In the 2023-24 financial year, approving the establishment of 100 5G labs in academic institutions across India for capacity building and to build the academic and start-up ecosystem for 6G.
3. To accelerate ecosystem research, approving 111 research proposals on the 6G network ecosystem, promoting research and innovation aligned with the global 6G technology roadmap.
4. Promoting the formation of the Bharat 6G Alliance, made up of domestic industry, academia, national research institutes and standards organisations, to draw up an action plan based on the Bharat 6G Vision. The alliance has signed memoranda of understanding with leading global 6G alliances to strengthen international cooperation on 6G wireless technology. The government also hosted the first international 6G symposium alongside the 2024 World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) and the 2024 India Mobile Congress (IMC), bringing together industry leaders, academics and government officials to discuss local and global 6G progress.
India contributed to the ITU IMT-2030 framework, known in the industry as 6G, which lists ubiquitous connectivity as one of the six 6G usage scenarios and coverage, interoperability and sustainability as 6G capabilities.
