On 12 June 2025 the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a final rule governing the use of bands above 24 GHz and the lower 37 GHz band for mobile radio services, and opened consultation on parts of the framework. The rule is intended to release 600 MHz of spectrum to support fixed wireless broadband, the Internet of Things and other flexible uses, and took effect on 14 July 2025.
Spectrum allocation
- bands above 24 GHz, such as 28 GHz, 37 GHz and 39 GHz, and the unlicensed 64-71 GHz band are opened to support 5G and future wireless technology;
- the lower 37 GHz band, 37-38.6 GHz, is designated for mobile and fixed wireless broadband services supporting high-speed, low-latency communication.
Further notice of proposed rulemaking
The FCC also issued a further notice of proposed rulemaking seeking comment on:
- stricter emission limits for the upper millimetre wave flexible use service (UMFUS) in bands above 37 GHz;
- introduction of a dynamic spectrum management system to replace the existing coordination mechanism;
- correction of errors in the power flux density parameters of the UMFUS technical rules.
Comments on the proposals were due by 14 July 2025, the same date on which the final rule took effect.
