On 10 February 2026 the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) formally published Notice No. 2026-9, making significant amendments to the technical standards for licence-exempt radio equipment. The core of the revision is a substantial increase in the power limit for 6 GHz Wi-Fi, alongside updated standards for Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, intended to support industrial infrastructure and make everyday connectivity noticeably more convenient.

Main changes

- Wi-Fi 7 (6 GHz band): the power limit for indoor and subway environments is raised to strengthen high-speed connectivity. In the 5925-6425 MHz band, 1 W EIRP is now permitted indoors and inside subway cars, up from 0.5 W EIRP; in the 6425-7125 MHz band, 0.5 W EIRP remains permitted indoors.

- Advanced Bluetooth: the technical standard is updated to include the new radio transmission formats used by the latest Bluetooth technology.

- Ultra-wideband (UWB) and positioning: the requirements for UWB and positioning technology are refined to ensure accuracy and energy efficiency of data transmission.

Regulatory background

The adjustment to 6 GHz power is an important response to the global wave of Wi-Fi 7 adoption. With the 320 MHz channels and 4K QAM modulation introduced by Wi-Fi 7, higher transmit power is key to realising performance and extending coverage.

Notably, Korea's update follows the global trend of managing higher-power 6 GHz use through automatic frequency coordination (AFC) systems to ensure harmonious coexistence with existing services. The amendment took effect on the date of publication, 10 February 2026, marking a substantive step by Korea in 6 GHz spectrum use and next-generation Wi-Fi deployment.
