The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released version 1.4 of its Regulatory Framework for Short Range Devices (SRD) and Terrestrial Internet of Things (IoT) Services, comprehensively revising licensing, spectrum use and data governance rules.
Licensing and service management
The revision focuses on IoT services based on low power wide area networks (LPWAN). Licences are valid for five years and renewable. All IoT gateways must be registered, and operators must submit information to the PTA every six months. Licensees must launch services within one year or the licence may be revoked.
Data storage and trial rules
The framework introduces data localisation requirements: IoT data may be stored abroad only with prior PTA approval. Cellular mobile operators and other local access providers may offer IoT services in their existing licensed bands or under conditions specified by the PTA.
To encourage research and innovation, the framework allows companies, academic institutions, government bodies and law enforcement agencies to conduct non-commercial IoT trials without an LPWAN licence, within strict conditions and time limits. The PTA says the update is intended to improve spectrum efficiency, prevent interference and strengthen supervision while promoting innovation in Pakistan's IoT ecosystem.
