Key words of this article:

Recently Amazon Canada delisted a large number of electric kettle products because sellers could not provide a test report demonstrating compliance with CSA C22.1.

What is CSA C22.1, what does it require, and how can sellers obtain a test report?

Kettles delisted on Amazon Canada: how to meet CSA C22.1 for electric heating products

What is CSA C22.1?

CSA C22.1, the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (abbreviated CE Code), applies to electrical works and electrically driven equipment of all voltages. It aims to establish safety standards for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment, taking into account protection against fire and electric shock hazards, including protection from electric shock, thermal effects, overcurrent, fault current and overvoltage.

What is the relationship between CSA C22.1 and product standards?

CSA C22.1 references other product standards, such as CSA C22.2 No. 46 Electric air-heaters and CSA C22.2 No. 64 Household cooking and liquid-heating appliances.

The scope clauses of the product standards also refer to CSA C22.1; the screenshot below shows the scope clause of CSA C22.2 No. 64. It can therefore be seen that the corresponding CSA product standards work together with CSA C22.1.

How can electric kettle products obtain a test report demonstrating compliance with CSA C22.1?

On 1 September 2023, Amazon Canada issued an announcement requiring online electric kettle listings to provide documentation demonstrating compliance with CSA C22.1. Besides conventional electric kettles, the policy also applies to any product that heats water in equipment that may contain lead, such as percolating coffee makers, stovetop espresso makers and moka pots that are not labelled as kettles.

For electric kettle products, suppliers should choose CSA C22.2 No. 64 or CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-15 as the basis for the test report. Because these two standards work together with CSA C22.1, possession of a test report demonstrates that the product complies with CSA C22.1.

What materials are required for SOR/2016-181 (Kettles Regulations) testing?
