The Egyptian National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has announced measures to prevent the activation of new mobile phones that do not comply with internationally recognised technical specifications and standards, in particular those of the GSMA. The aim is to protect users' rights, ensure safety and provide high quality telecommunications services. Non-compliant devices may negatively affect service quality for customers and carry health risks.
The NTRA encourages users to confirm that a new mobile device complies with internationally recognised technical specifications before purchase, by checking the 15-digit device identification code through the Telephone application, so that customers can identify devices that do not meet approved specifications before buying. The NTRA also urges citizens to obtain a tax invoice when purchasing any new device and to report any violations through official NTRA channels.
The NTRA has warned traders and distributors against selling non-compliant devices and coordinates with the Consumer Protection Agency on legal action. Telecommunications Regulation Law No. 10 of 2003 prohibits the sale, import or manufacture of non-compliant telecommunications equipment without proper authorisation. The NTRA offers citizens several channels for reporting violations, including the mobile call centre, the NTRA call centre, the NTRA hotline 155, the My NTRA application and a dedicated website.
