The National Radio Research Agency (RRA) of Korea published Notice No. 2025-22 on 31 December 2025, amending the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standard in part. The revision addresses failures of platform screen door (PSD) sensors that can be caused by 5G mobile broadband radio waves, with the aim of improving public transport safety.

What the revision changes

The amendment stems from reports of PSD laser sensors, including lidar sensors, being disturbed by 5G broadband radiation in actual operation. To ensure that such critical safety equipment operates reliably in a complex electromagnetic environment, Korea treats this as a national safety measure and requires PSD sensors to withstand broadband radiated radio frequency electromagnetic fields. At the technical level, the new standard adds an explicit broadband radiated immunity test for the resistance of sensor enclosure connectors to the EMC requirements for multimedia equipment.

According to the notice, the amendment takes effect six months after publication. To accompany the change, the RRA will also revise the notice on conformity assessment of broadcasting and communication equipment and the notice on the designation and management of testing laboratories for such equipment, so that the entire conformity assessment system stays consistent with the technical standard.

The revision reflects the Korean government's oversight of the potential risks arising from new wireless technologies and its emphasis on protecting the electromagnetic safety of critical public infrastructure while upgrading communication networks. Equipment manufacturers, testing laboratories and rail operators should follow the change closely and adjust product design and testing processes in good time.
