On 13 May 2026 Chile's Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism formally published Decree No. 60, approving the regulation on "common interoperability between mobile information and telecommunications devices and their chargers".
Standards basis
The regulation is based on the following international standards:
· IEC 62680-1-2, Universal serial bus interfaces for data and power – Part 1-2: Common components – USB Power Delivery specification;
· IEC 62680-1-3, Universal serial bus interfaces for data and power – Part 1-3: Common components – USB Type-C cable and connector specification.
Scope
The regulation applies to the following product categories:
1. Mobile phones
2. Tablet computers
3. Digital cameras
4. Headphones
5. Portable games consoles
6. Portable speakers
7. E-book readers
8. Keyboards
9. Mice
10. Portable navigation systems
11. Laptop computers
Note that where headphones are supplied with a charging case or enclosure, that accessory is treated as part of the main device and not as part of the charging device.
Technical requirements
The regulation sets out requirements on:
· The principles and technical specification for the USB Type-C receptacle;
· The way information is marked on the device;
· Information on charging capability and the specification of compatible charging devices;
· Exceptions;
· Information on the national consumer advisory service.
Consumer protection and penalties
The ministry also amended the Consumer Protection Act No. 19,496, adding a new Article 12 C.
Under that article, suppliers of mobile information and telecommunications devices must ensure common interoperability between the device and its charging equipment through a compatible charging interface and charging communication protocol.
Sellers of such devices must offer consumers the option of buying the product on its own or buying the product together with its charging device. They must also inform consumers clearly and in good time whether a charging device is included, and provide other information on the specification of compatible charging devices.
The regulation issued by the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism establishes the categories of equipment subject to these requirements, the technical specifications for each category, how reporting obligations are to be met and other related obligations. In terms of product categories, the regulation must cover at least mobile devices and laptop computers. Non-compliance may result in penalties.
