On 20 March 2023 the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) issued new notice 2023-0027, officially implementing the new energy storage battery standard KC 62619. The standard takes effect immediately from the date of publication, and the previous edition of KC 62619 will be abolished one year after the notice takes effect.
Compared with the 2019 edition of KC 62619, the main changes in the new standard are:
Terms and definitions are aligned with international standards;
The scope is expanded to cover mobile energy storage equipment, and it is more clearly stated that portable outdoor energy storage power supplies are also within scope; the scope is revised to between 500 Wh and 300 kWh;
Clause 5.6.2 adds requirements for battery system design;
Requirements for system locks are added;
EMC requirements are added;
A thermal propagation test procedure triggered by laser is added.
Compared with the international standard IEC 62619:2022, the differences of the new KC 62619 are:
1. Scope
In the international standard, the scope is industrial batteries;
KC 62619:2022 clearly applies to energy storage batteries and states that mobile and stationary energy storage batteries, camping power supplies and mobile electric vehicle chargers fall within scope.
2. Sample quantity requirements
In clause 6.2, the IEC standard requires R samples (R being one or more);
In the new KC 62619, three samples are required per cell test and one sample for the battery system.
3. The new KC 62619 adds Annex E, which details the assessment method for battery systems below 5 kWh.
The notice takes effect from the date of publication, and the previous edition of KC 62619 will be abolished one year after the notice takes effect.
