Key words of this article:

On 24 April 2026 Nigeria published its 2026-2030 spectrum roadmap, setting out a structured plan to expand broadband access, improve network quality and accelerate the adoption of next-generation technology.

Issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the roadmap provides a clear framework for managing radio spectrum, a critical resource for mobile communications, 5G and digital services. The initiative aims to meet growing data demand while supporting long-term digitalisation and economic growth.

Key highlights

Four strategic pillars: digital inclusion, market-driven investment, improved quality of service, and innovation.

Spectrum expansion: by 2030, assigned spectrum will increase from about 1.07 GHz to 3.8 GHz, enabling greater capacity and better performance.

Growing data demand: average monthly data use per user is expected to rise from 8.5 GB to 17.7 GB.

5G growth target: coverage of at least 50 percent by 2030.

Focus on rural connectivity: deployment of low bands such as 600 MHz to improve coverage in underserved areas.

Key technologies

The roadmap supports the deployment and expansion of:

· 5G networks;

· IoT and AI-driven applications;

· Satellite connectivity, including direct-to-device (D2D) services.

These technologies are expected to enhance connectivity, foster innovation and support multiple sectors of the economy.

Implementation plan

· 2026-2027: conduct a spectrum audit and assign key bands such as 600 MHz;

· 2026-2028: expand capacity through millimetre wave and 6 GHz spectrum;

· by 2030: optimise spectrum use and hold new spectrum auctions.

The 2030 vision

· Around 200 million internet users;

· 4G network coverage of 96 percent;

· 5G network coverage of 50 percent;

· Average speeds rising to 65-80 Mbps.

The roadmap reflects Nigeria's commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure. By expanding spectrum capacity and improving spectrum management, Nigeria aims to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity by 2030 and build a more inclusive high-speed digital economy.
