The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that, in order to prioritise high-capacity 5G network deployment, it has phased out the mid-band spectrum previously reserved for ultra-wideband (UWB) devices. From 1 April 2026 the 3300-3400 MHz band is formally closed to UWB devices, marking the full transfer of the entire 3300-3700 MHz range to 5G services.
Background
In recent years 5G services have spread rapidly around the world on the strength of their capacity advantages. To balance speed and coverage, 5G networks typically use the 3300-3800 MHz band. The MCMC therefore decided to recover the mid-band spectrum originally allocated to UWB devices in stages to support higher-capacity 5G deployment.
Timeline
Phased withdrawal schedule:
1. 3400-3700 MHz: UWB communication devices have not been permitted since 1 June 2025.
2. 3300-3400 MHz: UWB device access was formally withdrawn from 1 April 2026.
UWB communication devices may currently operate in Malaysia only within the 3700-10600 MHz range. Telecom operators may reuse the freed 3300-3700 MHz spectrum for high-capacity 5G services, improving the mobile broadband experience.
The move will further expand 5G network capacity in Malaysia, but it also imposes new compliance requirements on devices that rely on UWB technology, such as high-precision positioning, short-range radar and wireless transmission products. Manufacturers and importers concerned must ensure that their products use only the permitted bands (3700-10600 MHz); otherwise they cannot be lawfully sold in the Malaysian market. The MCMC reminds the market that any continued use of UWB devices in the 3300-3700 MHz band is a violation and will be subject to regulatory penalties.
