IEC Publishes General Standard on Electromagnetic Compatibility

On 7 February 2023 the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published IEC TR 61000-1-1:2023, Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - Part 1-1: General - Application and interpretation of fundamental definitions and terms. The standard is a technical report intended to specify and explain the terms considered fundamental to the concepts and practical application in the design and assessment of electromagnetic compatibility equipment and systems. It also addresses the distinction between EMC testing carried out in standardized installations and testing carried out elsewhere, for example at the place of manufacture or the place of installation of equipment, apparatus or systems (in situ testing or measurement).

IEC TR 61000-1-1:2023 EMC general standard

This second edition constitutes a technical revision and cancels and replaces the first edition, IEC TR 61000-1-1:1992. Compared with the previous edition, the new standard includes the following significant technical changes:
a) the general description of the electromagnetic environment has been updated in accordance with IEC TR 61000-2-5;
b) the descriptions of sources, of potentially susceptible equipment and systems and of coupling mechanisms have been updated;
c) the essential content of IEC TR 61000-2-3 (to be withdrawn) and IEC TR 61000-2-5 has been incorporated into this standard.
