The purpose of low temperature testing is to verify whether a specimen can be stored, handled and controlled under long-term low temperature conditions, and to determine the adaptability and durability of military and civilian equipment when stored and operated at low temperatures, as well as the physical and chemical properties of materials at low temperature. The standards specify requirements for pre-test conditioning, initial examination, specimen mounting, intermediate examination, post-test treatment, heating rate, test chamber load conditions, and the volume ratio between the specimen and the test chamber.
Typical failure modes of specimens at low temperature: parts and materials used in the product may crack or become brittle, moving parts may jam, and product characteristics may change.
