Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the ability of a device to operate satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable disturbance to anything in that environment. EMC testing therefore has two sides: emission, which limits what the product releases, and immunity, which describes what the product must tolerate.
Emission tests include radiated disturbance, conducted disturbance, harmonic current and voltage fluctuation and flicker. Immunity tests include electrostatic discharge, radiated radio-frequency field, electrical fast transients, surge, conducted disturbances induced by radio-frequency fields, voltage dips and short interruptions, and power-frequency magnetic field.
Typical standards are CISPR 32 / EN 55032, CISPR 35 / EN 55035, CISPR 14-1 and EN 55014 for household appliances, CISPR 15 for lighting, and the IEC 61000-4 series for immunity. NTEK holds a 3-metre and 10-metre anechoic chamber and shielded rooms for the full range of EMC tests.
