RoHS is a mandatory standard enacted by the EU, formally the Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment. It regulates the materials and process standards of electrical and electronic products to better protect human health and the environment. Battery products require RoHS compliance to enter the European market. Restricted substances include lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP).
Testing combines chemical analysis and XRF scanning: for finished-product RoHS testing the sample is divided into homogeneous materials, and to save cost XRF scanning is used first to judge whether the elements are present, with chemical testing following where the data indicate. RoHS report consolidation is also available.
