Because of the special status and high value of precious metals, their analysis and testing require high precision. The amount and form of precious metals vary greatly among different matrices, so multiple methods must be combined to complete the analysis. For example, gold is unevenly distributed in rock and minerals, so direct spectrometric determination is meaningless and chemical-spectrographic methods are generally used: the sample is dissolved with various chemical reagents, the gold is separated and enriched by chemical separation, and finally determined by plasma spectrometry.
