Noise testing measures how much sound a product produces and characterises its acoustic signature. For household appliances, power tools and office equipment, manufacturers have to declare a sound power level, and buyers increasingly specify noise limits as a purchase requirement.
The main methods are the free-field and reverberation room methods of the ISO 3740 series, the sound intensity method of ISO 9614, and the product-specific procedures of IEC 60704 for household appliances and IEC 62885 for vacuum cleaners. Measurements are made in a semi-anechoic chamber or a hemi-anechoic room with background noise low enough to satisfy the required correction.
NTEK reports both the A-weighted sound power level and the sound pressure level at the operator position, and can also analyse the frequency spectrum and identify dominant tonal components where a product is described as unusually annoying.
