An infrared forehead thermometer measures body temperature from the infrared energy emitted by the human body. Every object above absolute zero (-273 degC) emits infrared radiation; the thermometer receives that radiation through a sensor and derives the temperature reading. Because it avoids cross-infection and measures quickly, it is particularly suitable for screening people with fever in crowded places - safely and rapidly.
Since the thermometer works by absorbing energy, measurement causes no harm to the human body. Its advantages are a short measuring time and no contact with the skin; its limitations are lower accuracy, since the reading is affected by air temperature and wind speed and the exposed forehead skin temperature is not stable.
