According to the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), results are classified into Classes 1 to 5; the higher the class, the stricter the requirement. When Class 5 is specified in the customer's specification, no detachment is allowed at all.
About the cross-cut scribing and tape test method: the blade width is about 10 mm to 12 mm with an interval of 1 mm to 1.2 mm, forming 10 squares in total. Scribing in a straight line produces 10 equally spaced parallel cuts; scribing perpendicular to these cuts creates a 10 × 10 grid of 100 squares. The cross-cut blade must cut through to the substrate; cutting only into the coating invalidates the test.
After the grid is scribed, an adhesive tape test must be performed to check whether the coating detaches. First, apply the tape over the grid area, press it down firmly with a finger to ensure close contact, then pull the tape off with a sudden force, and visually check whether any coating has come off the substrate. In addition, not just any tape may be used; according to the JIS standard, the brand and model must be specified — for example, 3M Transparent Tape 600, which is 3/4 inch wide and available in two lengths of 1296 inches and 2592 inches.
The cross-cut method or the tape method verifies the adhesion performance of the product's surface coating or ink, and is used to validate the product's surface treatment process.
