Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are carbon-based chemicals that evaporate readily at room temperature. In an enclosed space such as a vehicle cabin or a newly decorated room they accumulate, and some of them cause odour, eye and throat irritation or longer-term health effects. VOC testing quantifies what a material or finished product releases.
For automotive interiors the usual methods are VDA 278 for thermal desorption of VOC and FOG, VDA 277 for total carbon emission, and chamber methods for the whole component. For building materials, furniture and consumer goods the relevant methods are the 1 m3 chamber and desiccator tests in the GB 18580 to GB 18584 series, and ISO 16000 for indoor air.
NTEK tests raw materials, semi-finished parts and complete assemblies, and helps customers identify which material in a construction is responsible for an odour or an over-limit result.
