California Proposition 65, formally the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted in November 1986. Its purpose is to protect California residents and the state's drinking water sources from substances known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, and to require truthful notification of residents when such substances are present. Proposition 65 regulates chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity in California; more than 700 chemicals have been listed as regulated.
