Tensile strength testing, also called the tensile test, evaluates the mechanical properties of metals. It determines a series of strength and plasticity indices. Strength is the ability of a material to resist elastic deformation, plastic deformation and fracture under external force. Plasticity is the ability to deform plastically without failure under load; the usual plasticity indices are elongation and reduction of area.
