Magnesium alloys are alloys based on magnesium with other elements added. Their characteristics are low density (about 1.8 g/cm³), high strength, large elastic modulus, good heat dissipation and vibration damping, greater impact load capacity than aluminum alloys, and good resistance to organic substances and alkalis. The main alloying elements are aluminum, zinc, manganese, cerium, thorium and small amounts of zirconium or cadmium. The most widely used are magnesium-aluminum alloys, followed by magnesium-manganese and magnesium-zinc-zirconium alloys. They are mainly used in aviation, aerospace, transportation, chemicals and rocketry. Magnesium is the lightest of the practical metals, with a specific gravity about 2/3 that of aluminum and 1/4 that of iron, combining high strength and high rigidity.
