Ball Drop Impact Testing

Test Overview

In the ball drop impact test, a ball of specified mass is dropped from different heights, or balls of different masses are dropped from a specified height, to measure the energy required to cause cracks in a bonded specimen under ball drop impact. The instrument uses standard steel balls that are electromagnetically suspended and automatically released, effectively avoiding systematic errors caused by human factors.

Application Scope

With the rapid development of the packaging industry, flexible packaging materials such as plastic films and sheets are increasingly widely used, and the related properties of these materials have received growing attention. Among them, the impact resistance of films and sheets is one of the important mechanical strength indicators.Ball drop impact testing is mainly used for impact strength testing of plastics, building materials, ceramics, acrylic, glass, coatings, hardware and other products. The test measures the damage degree and impact energy of the material. This instrument can also be used to perform comparative impact tests on specimens of the same material and the same specification to evaluate the quality of materials.

Reference Standards

Reference standards for ball drop impact testing in different industries:

GB/T 9639.1-2008 Plastics film and sheeting — Determination of impact resistance by the free-falling dart method — Part 1: Staircase method

GB/T 14485-1993 Test method for impact resistance of rigid plastic sheets and plastic parts for engineering use — Ball drop method
20192041-T-609 Test method for impact strength of ultra-thin glass — Ball drop impact method (planned)
GB/T 15267-1994 Rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sheet and film for food packaging
YBB00202005 PVC/PE/PVDC solid medicinal composite rigid sheet, etc.

Test Principle

1. Using DC electromagnetic control, the steel ball is automatically attracted under the electromagnetic chuck. When the drop button is pressed, the chuck instantly releases the steel ball, which falls freely, strikes the surface of the specimen and applies an instantaneous impact force to the test sample. The damage degree and impact energy of the material are measured to evaluate the impact strength of the product;

2. Comparative impact tests can also be performed on specimens of the same material and the same specification to evaluate the quality of materials.

Ball Drop Impact Testing

Test Methods

Ball drop impact test procedure:

1. Place the test item on the fixture and secure it.

2. Clamp the test item with the fixture.
3. Adjust to the required test height.
4. Connect the power supply.
5. Turn on the main power switch.
6. Select the steel ball required for the test and place it on the electromagnet.
7. Press the drop switch to start the test.
8. Test completed.
