An EU Authorised Representative (European Authorised Representative) is a natural or legal person expressly appointed by a manufacturer established outside the European Economic Area (EEA, comprising the EU and EFTA). This person can perform, on behalf of the manufacturer outside the EEA, the specific duties required of that manufacturer by the relevant EU directives and laws.
When a non-EU exporter's products encounter any problem during customs clearance, the authorised representative helps the exporter communicate with customs and resolve the issue; customs also usually require communication with the exporter's EU representative. If problems arise while the exporter's products are sold in the EU, the EU representative also assists in resolving them. The EU authorised representative therefore bears a certain risk: the higher the risk of the exported products, the higher the risk borne by the representative.
