MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is a document used by chemical manufacturers and importers to describe the physicochemical properties of a chemical (pH value, flash point, flammability, reactivity, etc.) and the hazards it may pose to user health (carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, etc.).
In European countries, the Material Safety Data Sheet is also called the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). ISO uses the term SDS, while the United States, Canada, Australia and many Asian countries use the term MSDS.
The MSDS is a comprehensive legal document that chemical production or sales enterprises must provide to customers as required by law. It provides sixteen items of information including physicochemical parameters, combustion and explosion performance, health hazards, safe handling and storage, spill response, first aid measures and relevant laws and regulations. The MSDS may be prepared by the manufacturer in accordance with the relevant rules, but to ensure the accuracy and standardisation of the report it may be prepared by a professional organisation.
