Polymer materials are a new class of structural materials widely used for their excellent chemical and physical properties. In practical use, unreasonable design or use can also lead to cracking or fracture. Classified by fracture mechanism, fracture modes fall into many types, of which fatigue cracking and fracture is one.
Fracture surface analysis of polymer materials is one of the important methods of polymer failure analysis. Fracture analysis is of great significance to material R&D and design: it identifies the principles and mechanisms involved, thereby improving product quality, optimising processes and helping to determine responsibility. Fracture refers to the random rupture of a material under external force, separating it into two or more parts. The surface or cross-section after fracture is called the fracture surface; analysing its morphological features reveals the nature and cause of the polymer failure. Fracture morphology analysis is an important method in polymer research. Under external load, polymer fracture gradually passes through three stages: crack initiation, stable propagation and rapid propagation.
