Asbestos is a natural mineral fibre with many advantages such as thermal insulation, anti-corrosion and electrical insulation, and its production cost is very low. It is widely used: there are nearly 3,000 types of asbestos products or products containing asbestos, found not only in building materials, equipment and soil at industrial sites, but also in indoor and outdoor decoration, automotive parts, medical test instruments, test tubes, railway sleepers and rubber processing plants.
Although asbestos is widely used, it is classified by the World Health Organization as a Group 1 carcinogen. Crushed asbestos fibres form dust which, when inhaled, accumulates in the lungs and cannot be expelled; long-term accumulation can cause diseases and cancers including asbestosis, laryngeal cancer, mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. To date, countries such as Canada and New Zealand have explicitly listed asbestos as a banned substance. Although China has not completely banned asbestos, it explicitly requires that amphibole asbestos fibres must not be found in cosmetic-grade, pharmaceutical-grade and food-grade talc by X-ray diffraction analysis.
Asbestos testing methods vary with the environment in which asbestos occurs and the purpose of evaluation. NTEK is equipped with professional instruments including X-ray diffractometers (XRD), polarised light microscopes (PLM) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM&EDS) to perform qualitative and quantitative asbestos analysis from multiple angles.
