The separator is an important component of a lithium-ion battery: a microporous membrane that separates the positive and negative electrode sheets, and a polymer functional material with a nanoscale porous structure. In a lithium-ion battery the polymer electrolyte both provides a pathway for ion migration and acts as the separator between the electrodes. Its main function is to prevent the two electrodes from contacting and short-circuiting while still allowing electrolyte ions to pass. Its properties determine the interfacial structure and internal resistance of the battery and directly affect capacity, cycle life and safety. The quality of the membrane directly affects battery performance, for example whether short circuits or low voltage occur.
