CWA 17553:2020 is a newly published European standard, implemented in June 2020. It is neither an EU Medical Device Directive standard nor a PPE Directive standard. CWA 17553:2020 specifies minimum requirements for reusable or single-use daily masks and materials intended for adults and for children aged 3 to 12 (who must be supervised by an adult). It mainly covers reusable or single-use "community face coverings" - single-layer or multi-layer, woven, knitted or non-woven, head-mounted or ear-mounted - that provide a barrier effect.
CWA 17553:2020 is the guidance on community face coverings published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) on 17 June 2020.
These masks have become a primary means of limiting the spread of COVID-19: they minimise the projection of respiratory droplets, sputum or secretions when talking, coughing or sneezing, including from asymptomatic wearers, and they prevent the wearer's hands from touching that area of the face.
CWA 17553:2020 specifies minimum requirements for single-use or reusable community face coverings intended for the general public. These minimum requirements cover design, performance, test methods, packaging, marking and information for use. The document does not apply to community face coverings for children under three years of age. CWA 17553:2020 explicitly sets out the minimum requirements for reusable or single-use daily masks and materials for adults and for children aged 3 to 12 who are supervised by an adult.
