Solvents used in plastic running tracks release toxic substances such as toluene and xylene, which have a pungent odour and can cause skin irritation and dizziness. In addition, inferior plastic tracks contain heavy-metal driers such as lead salts, which promote curing of the track but cause permanent heavy-metal lead pollution. When children's skin is in prolonged contact with such tracks, lead can penetrate the body and cause elevated blood lead levels, i.e. lead poisoning. Given actual use conditions, it is therefore necessary to consider not only the content of toxic and hazardous substances in the material itself but also to monitor the air quality above the track.
