Test Overview
Dust ingress testing is used to test electrical and electronic products, automotive and motorcycle parts, and seals for their ability to prevent dust from entering seals and enclosures in a dusty environment, and to determine the effects of airborne dust on products. It verifies the performance of electrical and electronic products, automotive and motorcycle parts, and seals during use, storage and transportation in dusty environments.
Dust Protection Levels
IEC/EN60529 defines 7 dust protection levels (Level 0 to Level 6), dust protection level (e.g. IP5X - dust protection level 5)
Level 0: No dust protection at all
Level 1: Protected against solid objects larger than 50 mm entering the equipment
Level 2: Protected against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm entering the equipment
Level 3: Protected against solid objects larger than 2.5 mm entering the equipment
Level 4: Protected against solid objects larger than 1.00 mm entering the equipment
Level 5: Ingress of dust is not totally prevented, but dust shall not penetrate in a quantity that interferes with the satisfactory operation of the equipment or impairs safety
Level 6: Completely dust-tight
