Test Overview
Scratch testing is one of the commonly used standard methods for measuring the adhesion (bonding) strength between a surface film and the substrate material. A stylus made of a material harder than the surface film is drawn across the surface of the sample or workpiece, and the load on the stylus is gradually increased until the film separates from the substrate. The load at this point is the critical load, from which the adhesion strength between the film and the substrate can be calculated.
Application Scope
Scratch testing is mainly used to evaluate the shear, scratching, gouging, scraping and engraving resistance of materials such as anodized materials, rigid organic materials, powder coatings, soft metals, plastics, glass, and adhesive coatings.
