The electrolyte is one of the key materials of a lithium-ion battery and can be regarded as its "blood": it conducts ions between the positive and negative electrodes and is what allows the battery to achieve high voltage and high power. An electrolyte is generally made from organic solvents, lithium salts and additives, blended in a defined ratio under controlled conditions.
Electrolyte testing analyses the chemical composition, concentration and purity of the electrolyte in order to evaluate its performance and stability in a battery or electrolytic cell system. The aim is to check key parameters such as impurities, degradation products, solubility and conductivity, and so to determine their effect on battery capacity, cycle life and safety. Testing electrolyte quality helps engineers and manufacturers optimise battery design, formulation and production processes, improving performance and reliability to meet the needs of different applications. Electrolyte testing also helps ensure stable operation of the battery system, reduces the risk of battery failure and accidents, and improves the efficiency of energy storage and use.
