Plastics and rubber both belong to polymer materials, composed mainly of carbon and hydrogen atoms, with some containing small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, silicon, fluorine and sulphur, giving them special properties and uses. Simply put, the essential difference between plastics and rubber is that plastics deform plastically while rubber deforms elastically. At room temperature plastics are solid and hard and cannot be stretched, whereas rubber has lower hardness, is elastic, can be stretched longer and returns to its original shape when the stretching stops.
