Salt Spray Testing

Test Overview

Salt spray testing is an environmental test that uses artificially created salt spray environmental conditions, mainly produced by salt spray test equipment, to evaluate the corrosion resistance of products or metallic materials. It falls into two categories: natural environmental exposure tests and artificial accelerated simulated salt spray environmental tests. In an artificial simulated salt spray test, a test device with a certain enclosed volume — a salt spray test chamber — is used to create a salt spray environment artificially within that space to evaluate the salt spray corrosion resistance of products. Compared with the natural environment, the chloride salt concentration in the artificial salt spray environment can be several times or even dozens of times that of natural salt spray, which greatly accelerates the corrosion rate and significantly shortens the time required to obtain test results.

Classification of Salt Spray Tests

(1) Neutral Salt Spray Test (NSS)

This is the earliest and currently the most widely used accelerated corrosion test method. It uses a 5% sodium chloride solution with the pH adjusted to the neutral range (6~7) as the spray solution. The test temperature is 35℃, and the salt spray collection rate is required to be between 1 and 2 ml/80cm2.h.

(2) Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (ASS)

Developed on the basis of the neutral salt spray test, glacial acetic acid is added to the 5% sodium chloride solution to lower the pH to about 3, making the solution acidic, so the resulting salt spray changes from neutral to acidic. Its corrosion rate is about 3 times faster than that of the NSS test.

(3) Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (CASS)

A rapid salt spray corrosion test recently developed abroad. The test temperature is 50℃, and a small amount of copper salt — copper chloride — is added to the salt solution to strongly induce corrosion. Its corrosion rate is about 8 times that of the NSS test.

(4) Cyclic Salt Spray Test

A comprehensive salt spray test which is in fact a combination of the neutral salt spray test and the damp heat steady state test. It is mainly used for cavity-type complete products; through the penetration of the humid environment, salt spray corrosion occurs not only on the product surface but also inside the product. The product is alternately transferred between salt spray and damp heat environmental conditions, and finally the electrical and mechanical properties of the complete product are examined for any changes.

Reference standards: IEC60068-2-11(GB/T2423.17), ISO 4628.3, ASTM B117, JIS-Z2371...

Common test parameters:

Salt spray tests can be divided into three categories:

Neutral salt spray test (NSS) (solution: pH adjusted to the neutral range of 6.5~7.2; test temperature 35℃)

Acetic acid salt spray test (ASS) (solution: glacial acetic acid added to lower the pH to about 3)

Copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray test (CASS) (test temperature 50℃; a small amount of copper salt - copper chloride - added to the salt solution)

Test duration: 16H (minimum)
