EPR is the abbreviation of Extended Producer's Responsibility, an EU policy. In the EU, the collection and recycling of post-consumer waste for most products is managed through the EPR system. Producers must pay an "eco-contribution" fee to ensure responsibility for managing the waste generated when their products reach end of life.
EPR is a regulatory management framework that has been enacted in many jurisdictions, but EPR is not the name of a single regulation. The so-called EU WEEE Directive and the German electrical equipment law, packaging law and battery law are all legislative implementations of this framework in the EU and Germany. Accordingly, German WEEE, the German packaging law and the battery law all fall within the scope of EPR. In addition, most European countries, not only EU member states, have long had regulations governing EPR. EPR has recently attracted attention because Amazon requires all sellers on its German and French sites to provide an EPR registration number.
EPR registration requires company information and product sales information, periodic data reporting (monthly, quarterly or annually) and annual renewal to keep the EPR registration number valid long term.
